From television hits to blockbusters - Croatian names on the world stage

The path from the theater stage in Zagreb or Split to the film sets in London and Los Angeles is rarely quick and easy. However, several Croatian actors have managed to find their place in major film productions over the years. Sometimes through memorable supporting roles, sometimes through television series, their names have been inscribed in the filmographies of major studios.

One of the most recognizable names from our region is certainly Rade Šerbedžija, an actor whose career spans several decades and various film industries. The audience remembers him from the film Eyes Wide Shut (1999), a cult achievement by director Stanley Kubrick where he found himself on the set with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. He himself later used to say that working with Kubrick was one of the most unusual experiences in his career, because the director was known for repeating the same scene dozens of times. Not long after that, he appeared in the crime hit Snatch (2000) directed by Guy Ritchie, and then in the big Hollywood blockbusters: Mission: Impossible II (2000) and Batman Begins (2005). He also found his place in the wizarding world in the film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 (2010), where he portrays the wand maker Mykew Gregorovitch, a character who is an important part of the story of the search for the Elder Wand. Over the years, he has become almost the face of striking supporting roles that audiences remember long after the film is over.

While Šerbedžija built his career through film roles, Goran Višnjić became known to a wider audience for the role of Dr. Luka Kovač in the popular American series ER (1999 – 2008). This role turned him into one of the favorite characters of the long-running medical drama and opened the door to numerous projects in Hollywood. Before that, he appeared in the political thriller The Peacemaker (1997) alongside George Clooney and Nicole Kidman, and later in the fantasy comedy Practical Magic (1998) and the more recent horror Hellraiser (2022). Višnjić often emphasized that it was television production that opened the door to a series of projects for him and enabled a long-term career outside of Croatia.

Mira Furlan, an actress with strong charisma who in the early nineties got a role in the sci-fi series Babylon 5 (1993 – 1998), and later in the popular series Lost (2004 – 2010), where she played the mysterious Danielle Rousseau, left a big mark on American television. Although her role was secondary, many viewers remembered her precisely for the atmosphere she brought to every scene. In addition to television projects, she also appeared in international film productions, including the drama The Abandoned (2006). Mira Furlan passed away on January 20, 2021 at the age of 65, and left a strong mark on the film and television industry, and is still remembered today by both the audience and the colleagues she worked with.

Among the younger generation of actors, Zrinka Cvitešić stood out in particular. After a successful theater and film career in Croatia, she also received opportunities in large-scale productions. She appeared in the film Lost in London (2017), an unusual project by actor and director Woody Harrelson that was filmed in a single shot, the so-called one-take. She later played a major role in the Amazon series The Power (2023), based on the popular novel by Naomi Alderman, which attracted great international attention. It is important to note that Cvitešić is the winner of the prestigious London theater award Olivier (2014) for the musical Once, one of the most important awards received by a Croatian actor on the British stage.

Slavko Sobin is a promising young actor who is increasingly getting opportunities in big productions. In the remake of the famous prison film Papillon (2017), he found himself in a team with Charlie Hunnam and Rami Malek, and in the war drama The Zookeeper’s Wife (2017), and later in the action thriller 97 Minutes (2023).

Goran Bogdan achieved a notable role in the third season of the American series Fargo (2017). The series is known for bringing together a new cast each season and unusual crime stories inspired by the Coen brothers’ film of the same name. Bogdan later starred opposite Naomi Watts in the film Infinite Storm (2022), based on the true story of the rescue of mountaineers on Mount Washington. International audiences could also see Goran Bogdan in the Netflix film Faraway (2023).

In the world of film, where competition and opportunities are often immeasurable, their successes show how much talent can transcend the boundaries of small cinema. This is precisely why the stories of these actors remain proof that the journey from domestic stages to big film sets is not impossible. At the same time, they opened the door to new generations of actors from this area, showing that an international career can be built even from a small market. That’s why their successes are not only personal stories, but also a valuable promotion of the Croatian scene in front of an audience around the world.
